Los Angeles Federal Court on June 13, 2026, accuses Netflix of defamation after Tyra Banks claimed that the streaming service misrepresented her in their three part documentary. Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model

Netflix is accused in the lawsuit of modifying Banks’ interview, which lasted more than three hours, down to approximately 16 minutes by cutting off certain context clips and creating a false narrative. According to Banks’ legal representatives, the charges involve implied defamation, false knowledge of facts, breach of contract, and false assurances. ABC News acquired a complaint that claimed to show clips that were “rearranged and removed from context” to support slanderous and untrue stories.

Banks’ knowledge of Shandi Sullivan’s sexual assault during Season 2 filming is the main point of contention in the documentary. Banks challenges the allegation that she knowingly tolerated assault on her program, used hurtful behavior to boost her ratings, and was unable to recall the incident when asked. In the interview, Banks was asked, “Do you remember Shandi’s story?” He replied, ‘Hmm, I do,’ and then the screen went black, creating misleading implications through selective editing.

Banks is against Netflix’s use of her image on the soundtrack cover art without permission, which may result in false endorsement impressions. The three-part series premiered on February 16, 2026, and it features interviews with past contestants, producers, judges, actors & performers about Shandi’s assaults and body-shaming culture allegations. This documentary also highlighted the exploitative nature of the show’s production.

Banks filed a complaint against Netflix, the production company and co-directors Lucy More and Daniel Sivan. The application asks for a permanent injunction and legal fees to compensate for future business opportunity loss, personal brand value damage, and business income loss.
